I'm a Gen X woman in long-term sobriety, living with bipolar disorder and CPTSD, mother of two grown young men, navigating perimenopause, and writing honestly about all of it — because I wish someone had done the same for me.

Kristen — GenXFemHealth

I grew up watching my father lose his battle with alcoholism. I spent years not realizing I was losing mine too — until the wine became a daily ritual, the anxiety became unbearable, and the diagnosis list grew longer than I could manage alone.
Bipolar disorder. CPTSD. Generalized anxiety. Alcohol use disorder. I didn't get sober because I had it all figured out. I got sober because I finally ran out of other options — and because I wanted to be present for my kids in a way I hadn't been.
GenXFemHealth started as a way to process my own recovery in public. The If I Could Help One Person series — now over 45 parts and counting — is my unfiltered memoir: the relapses, the diagnoses, the relationships, the grief, and the slow, nonlinear work of healing.
Alongside the memoir, I write about the health topics that matter most to women in their 40s and beyond: perimenopause, nutrition, supplementation, strength training, and the mental wellness strategies that have actually worked for me.
"If I could help one person feel less alone in what they're going through — that's enough. That's everything."
— Kristen, Founder of GenXFemHealth
I've been in recovery from alcohol use disorder for over five years. I write about sobriety from the inside — not from a clinical distance. The shame, the identity shift, the unexpected gifts, and the hard days that still come.
I've lived with bipolar disorder and CPTSD for over two decades. I write about what it actually feels like to manage a mental health diagnosis in midlife — the medications, the therapy, the setbacks, and the small daily wins that add up.
As a Gen X woman navigating perimenopause, I research and write about the health topics that matter most to women over 40 — nutrition, supplementation, bone health, strength training, and the hormonal shifts that affect everything from sleep to mood to metabolism.

Perimenopause can begin as early as the mid-30s and typically spans 4–10 years before menopause. We cover the full spectrum — from irregular cycles and hot flashes to mood changes and sleep disruption — with evidence-based strategies to navigate each phase with confidence.
Estrogen decline accelerates bone density loss in the years surrounding menopause. We translate the latest research on calcium, vitamin D, resistance training, and lifestyle factors into practical guidance to protect your skeletal health for decades to come.
Women lose 3–8% of muscle mass per decade after 30, with the rate accelerating after menopause. We champion strength training, adequate protein intake, and creatine supplementation as non-negotiable pillars of midlife vitality — not optional extras.
Hormonal fluctuations profoundly affect mood, cognition, and emotional resilience. We explore mindfulness, breathwork, sleep optimization, and stress management through the lens of Gen X women's lived experience — practical, not preachy.
The memoir essays are my personal experience — raw, unfiltered, and written from memory and reflection. The wellness articles are grounded in peer-reviewed research, leading medical institutions, and credentialed healthcare professionals. I always cite my sources and I always tell you when something is my opinion versus established science.
I am not a doctor. I am a woman who has done the hard work of getting sober, managing a mental health diagnosis, and researching her way through perimenopause — and I share everything I learn along the way.
